Impose a fee
Impose a fee (perhaps $200.00 per child per year) on families with children in the school system. No need to tax ALL to continue supporting the few

Just keep on keeping on to pare the budget. Too many areas of waste have existed for too long.
I never did agree with Gov. King's handout of computers, and still believe it is not necessary to provide these at taxpayers' expense.

All Colleges/Tech Schools need job placement programs.
We need to enforce job placement programs for all education. All Colleges and Tech programs should have to base their tuition rates off of how many people place jobs each year, after completing the program. Schools with the lowest rates of job placement, are required to lower tuition rates. If a student has a change of mind in their career choice, after completing the course and doesn't want to be included in job placement, must sign a document stating so. That way it will not go against the school. Also if a school has to refer students to out of…

First I need to tell you we are thrilled with the direction you are taking us, your bravery under fire and courage to do what is right comme
vouchers for the scool of choice, homeschooling, private schools, etc. we would save money as a state and competition would pop up for the public schools. Our public school system is so heavy with administration and so much paperwork is generated to keep them busy. The teachers need to be free to teach children. learning can be fun & interesting but our children spend most of the day in lecture & sitting in their seat.

Find a WorkForce solution for prisons to offer real college courses that count for real credits towards a degree.
Time, and plenty of it. Education has proven to be successful for lowering crime and repeating the cycle. Allow inmates to work and develop real skills, real college credits, real work generating income for teachers, and inmates to plan a successful future. I am sure people will scream no fair, but they can't get past the punishment mode and really understand the problem.

Career and Technical Education
I am a strong supporter of CTE and worry out high school and middle school guidance departments are steering student to the centers because they feel the student is not "college material" thus setting them up to struggle when they get there. Most CTE are offering college level programing and offering dual enrollments so these students are infact COLLEGE STUDENTS. This is a reason to stop sending kids there to give them something to do with their hands and start promoting this as a Pre-community college and 4 year college institution and is preparing students with nationally recognized certifications and…

To promote better education, get rid of tenure for public school teachers. The union is the demise of a good education.
Teachers Unions are the demise of public education. When a teacher makes it through the first two years, they are now tenured. This allows the bad teachers to keep their jobs. This isn't fair to the hard working good teachers that many districts have. The union fights for every problem that arises with teachers. Many disputes are not wanting to do their job as per their contract. The right thing to do is get rid of unions and put that money back in teachers pockets.

Performance-Based Pay Raises: Require School Leaders and Teachers to Communicate Effectively with Students/Families
The culture in our schools must reflect or mirror that of successful businesses, project managers and entrepreneurs. How do we measure success? Through achievement--getting things done.. School Leaders must be clear about academic goals and timelines for achievement. This must be communicated effectively with students and parents. Then and only then can everyone be held accountable. Is this too simply stated? It seems to make much more sense than adding new programs, new services and extra professional development...

Property tax break for home-schoolers
$17,000 per child, per school year. That's how much is spent average to send the public school children, preK-12 to school in our town. We home school our two children, along with at least 10 other children that we know of in our town, yet we, along with the other families mentioned, pay for our own curriculum, field trips, extra-curricular activities lessons and fees, transportation fees, computer and supplies. This is a great savings to the taxpayers of our town to have these kids home educated and we feel that we should either be eligible for a property tax break…

Change college year to Oct-Jun so students can work summer jobs
Changing the college year to start Oct 15 (or even Sept 15) would allow students to get good-paying summer jobs in Maine, where the tourist season runs through at least mid-September. Many resorts and businesses remain open until Columbus Day weekend. Now students are out in early May, with no employers hiring yet; then these students have to leave mid-August to get back to class. They are losing income opportunities (to pay back their student loans!) and they are not getting the experience as an employee to build their resumes. Tourism is a major economic engine in this state. And…

Illiteracy exists for 17-20% of the population because it is difficult to take the first step to act on the solution.
Although, I have spoken with legislators, state office personnel, schools and superintendents about the solution to illiteracy....I have not yet spoken to the illiterate parents directly- because they can not read and most work two jobs for low pay. What I have experienced to date over several years are there are few decision makers in the group when the subject is the solution to illiteracy. They would rather let someone else do the work....like NCLB...but it is and has failed...
This solution to illiteracy can in truth be actualized within 15 minutes of classroom time and the opinion of an…1 vote -
Get the smartest teaches in the state & put all schools on line.
Where we are in the computer age, this could be done. All would be needed is a data base & one building & teachers could teach thousands state wide from home. ( also more pay ). If you do the math of what isn't needed anymore, this money could apply to health care,or future trade school for people on DHS. Think if this was done thru out every state, would we be in the mess we are in now???

voucher system
I would love to have a voucher system that would allow parents to send their kids to a school of choice. Not every kid will do well in a public, whether it be class size, the teachers, or ciriculam. To be able to have a set amount for each kid and then choose where that kid goes, give the parents across all incomes to be able to make sure they can get their child the best education. it would also create compatition between schools to fight to have the best education.

Get rid of the free laptops for public school students!!!
My homeschooled 5th grader uses a refurbished computer. As a parent I buy curriculum, supplies and also furnish my time to educate my child. My husband and I also work and pay taxes, both income and property to educate, feed and support other people's children. What's next, free memory foam mattresses for them all? Pretty pathetic when the recipients of government largesse are given (for free) much better equipment than the producers of said largesse can provide their own children.
Who polices the usage of these computers? I just read an article detailing the anecdotal observations of a parent and…43 votes
